Buying a SIM Card
Physical SIM cards from Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, XL Axiata, and Smartfren are widely available at airports, operator stores, and minimarkets (Indomaret, Alfamart). Bring your passport — registration is required by Indonesian law.
eSIM Options
eSIMs are increasingly available for Indonesia from both local operators and international providers. Telkomsel and several global eSIM platforms offer tourist data plans. Ensure your device is eSIM-compatible and unlocked before travel.
Coverage & Data
4G coverage is strong in major cities and tourist hubs (Bali, Lombok, Java). Remote islands and rural areas may have limited 3G or no signal. Telkomsel generally offers the widest coverage. Data packages are affordable and can be topped up easily.
Registration Requirements
All SIM cards must be registered with a valid passport. Operators will photograph your passport and take your registration details at point of sale. Unregistered SIMs are deactivated by the government.
