Money, Currency & Tipping

Indonesia's currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Large denominations are common due to exchange rates. Tipping is appreciated but not always expected.

Currency & Exchange

The Rupiah (IDR, symbol Rp) is the only legal tender. Exchange rates fluctuate — compare rates before exchanging. Authorised money changers (look for official Bank Indonesia-licensed signs) generally offer better rates than hotels. Avoid street touts offering unusually high rates.

ATMs & Cards

ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas. Visa and Mastercard are most widely accepted. Inform your bank before travel to avoid blocks. ATM withdrawal fees and foreign transaction charges vary by card — check with your provider. Some rural areas are cash-only.

Tipping Culture

Tipping is not traditionally obligatory in Indonesia but is increasingly expected in tourist areas. Restaurants may add a 5–10% service charge; additional tipping is discretionary. Typical informal tips: driver/guide Rp 50,000–100,000/day; spa therapist Rp 20,000–50,000; hotel porter Rp 10,000–20,000 per bag.

Budgeting Notes

Prices vary enormously between tourist hotspots (Bali's Seminyak) and local areas. Street food (warung) is very affordable; tourist restaurants charge multiples more. Always clarify prices before ordering or accepting services.
