Health & Safety

With the right precautions, Indonesia is a rewarding destination. Consult a travel medicine clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.

Vaccinations & Pre-Travel Health

Commonly recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and Tetanus-Diphtheria. Rabies vaccine may be advised for extended travel or adventure activities. Japanese Encephalitis is considered for longer rural stays. Yellow Fever certificate required if arriving from endemic countries. Consult a travel health clinic for personalised advice.

Food, Water & Mosquito-borne Disease

Drink only bottled or purified water; avoid ice of uncertain origin. Dengue fever is present year-round across Indonesia — use long sleeves, repellent (DEET 20%+), and stay in air-conditioned or screened accommodation. Malaria risk exists in some outer islands (Papua, Maluku, NTT); anti-malarial prophylaxis may be recommended.

Safety & Natural Hazards

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire — earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunamis are possible. Familiarise yourself with local emergency procedures and monitor alerts (BMKG: bmkg.go.id). Ocean rip currents claim lives annually; swim only at patrolled beaches and heed flag warnings. Bali in particular has strong surf and currents.

Travel Insurance & Medical Facilities

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Private hospitals in Jakarta and Bali (BIMC, Siloam, RS Kasih Ibu) provide good care; rural and outer island facilities are limited. Carry a small medical kit with oral rehydration salts, antiseptic, and any prescription medications.
