This information is general guidance and may change. Always verify official requirements before departure.
Dress & Modesty
Dress modestly when visiting temples, mosques, government offices, and rural communities. In Bali, a sarong and sash are required at Hindu temples — these are often provided or available to rent at the entrance. On beaches and in resort areas, swimwear is acceptable. Toplessness is illegal in Bali.
Greetings & Body Language
A friendly smile and a slight nod is a common greeting. Handshakes are common in professional contexts; use the right hand or both hands when giving/receiving items or shaking hands. Pointing with one finger is considered rude — use your thumb or an open hand. Do not pat adults on the head; the head is considered sacred.
Religious Observance
Remove shoes before entering homes, temples, and many local businesses. During the call to prayer (azan), be respectful near mosques. During Ramadan, be sensitive about eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours. In Bali, do not step over religious offerings (canang sari) on the ground.
Photography
Always ask permission before photographing people, especially in rural or ceremonial contexts. Some temples and ceremonies restrict photography. Posing disrespectfully at sacred sites is culturally offensive and increasingly subject to penalties (particularly in Bali).
